White House petitioned on firearm control.

Hours after a 20-year-old wielding a semi-automatic assault rifle gunned down up to 20 children in Connecticut, a petition for the White House web site contacting stricter gun laws drew from more than 100, 000 signatures.

The petition was among nearly a dozen created following the shootings on Friday in Newtown.

"The goal in this petition is to force the National government to produce legislation that limits use of guns. While a national dialogue is crucial, laws are the only means where we can reduce the amount of people killed by gun, " the creator, who can be identified only as "David G.

"The signatures on this petition represent a collective demand for a bipartisan discussion resulting in a set of laws that regulates what sort of citizen obtains a gun.

By Sunday, 117, 979 folks had signed on, more than quadruple the threshold needed for White House response. The administration responds to those that get 25, 000 signatures within thirty days.

The petition now adds to the already-mounting pressure on President Obama to take action. He said on Friday that it was time to "take meaningful action" to halt similar incidents, but he failed to specify what action.

The other petitions introduced following the massacre generally asked for the identical response: "Today IS the evening: Sponsor strict gun control laws in wake of the CT school massacre, " "Start the practice to enact Federal Gun management reforms, " "begin a nationwide conversation on sensible gun management. "

But three others asked the White House to look at a different tack: "A gun in most classroom. Arm every teacher and principal to guard themselves and their students during an attack, " "Ensure the other Amendment cant be infringed in anyway limiting citizens chance to defend against tyrannical governments, " and "Have armed security in all the schools across the nation who definitely are ex military from combat MOSs as well as combat proven. " Those petitions have thus far drawn fewer than 4, 000 signatures each.
