The latest treatment at the Cleveland Clinic shows promise in assisting those with severe asthma. The procedure has been utilized in clinical trials for several years, and the outcome is usually life changing for many patients with it.

Life with extreme asthma is hard. In order to prevent an asthma assault, Karen Ecker needed to call home like a shut inside.

"I couldn’t go outside without a mask. I was just about a hermit in my house, " Ecker said.

Those that have severe asthma often need to take powerful medications for you to open their airways. However sometimes even these medicines aren't enough.

"Any style of triggers like perfumes or maybe lotions or air fresheners would send me right into a pretty major asthma assault, and with that I'd end up having to visit the emergency room, " Ecker said.

Ecker could only work at home. But the toughest part was not the ability to provide the care she wanted for my child daughter.

"She was two as i got sick. I couldn’t study her a bedtime report. I couldn’t sing along with her without coughing, " Ecker said.

Now, Ecker can certainly enjoy being outdoors along with her daughter and their own new dog. All due to a non-drug treatment called bronchial thermoplasty. Doctor. Sumita Khatri from your Cleveland Clinic explains.

"It involves the use of heat which is given to the lining of your lungs, the airways to reduce the thickness on the muscle around those air passage, " Khatri said.

Through bronchial thermoplasty, a tube is inserted in the patient's airway, and a catheter is usually threaded through so heat is usually applied to the muscle tissue.

Bronchial thermoplasty is conducted in three separate appointments. Each procedure treats a different section of the lungs.

Even before the third procedure, many of your patients feel better.

"Does that mean that their asthma's long gone? No. Does it signify they never have an asthma flare? No. Often they still carry out have asthma flares but we've remarked that the severity of your flare is less along with the duration of the pazazz is less, " Khatri claimed.

Doctors at the Cleveland Center are studying results just for them to figure out which patients are most likely to benefit from bronchial thermoplasty. A lot of patients express these exact same thoughts.

“It’s like a brand new life. I get emotional each and every time I talk about the item, " Ecker said.

Ecker can now do things most people take for granted. She's not had an asthma assault since she had the method. And she rarely has to use an inhaler.
